Interview with Lucia: How a Teen Achieved C1 in French by 17

As part of our celebration of the French language during Francophonie Month, 12th-grade student Maria Molino interviewed one of her classmates, Lucia Sempris, who had recently achieved an impressive milestone: earning a C1 certification in French at just 17 years old.

Lucia’s journey with French began right here at Isaac Rabin. She was first introduced to the language in elementary school, but it wasn’t until the COVID-19 pandemic that her relationship with French truly deepened.

“I found myself drawn to the richness of the French language and culture,” she shared.

Lucia's motivation grew steadily, and so did her skills with the language; eventually, she set her sights on one of the most challenging language certifications offered by the French Ministry of Education: the DALF C1. This diploma certifies an advanced level of proficiency in French, and preparing for it is no small task.

When asked why she decided to pursue such a rigorous exam, Lucia responded: “I’ve always been open to finishing big goals.”

Her study strategy was self-driven and resourceful. She used YouTube videos for tips on exam strategies, listened to French-language podcasts to improve her listening skills, and practiced extensively with worksheets and mock exams. She also placed a strong emphasis on mentally preparing herself for the pressure of the real test.

Lucia’s success is a testament to the power of dedication, self-motivation, and passion for learning. Her achievement inspires not just French learners, but anyone striving to reach a challenging goal.
